This cold hardy cultivar originally comes from Central Euope. It is widely planted in Burgenland, Austria where it is a popular varietal. It is also blended with its offspring, Zweigelt. It came to Wastingtion State via Canada in 1941 by Washington State University researcher Dr. Walter Clore. 

Elegance and finesse are commom hallmarks. Its sensory profile has it perched somewhere between Pinot Noir and Syrah. 

Depending where the grapes is grown, it is also know as Frankovka, Kékfrankos, or Lemberger. 


Tasting Notes

This medium bodied Austrian varietal presents characteristics from an array of wild berries. Bright and refreshing with a suggestion of anise and rosewater.

Wild cherry, wild raspberry, wild strawberry, rhubarb, rose, white pepper

Pairs with:  Roasted duck, pheasant, crab cakes, sweet & salty bites like prosciutto wrapped dates, bacon wrapped pineapple.

A cool weather Austrian varietal that thrives in Washington State. Bright, medium body, fruit forward.

Showcases a peppery nose of wild cherry and rhubarb pie with a refreshing, tart finish.

Pair with cured Italian meats, Dungeness crab cakes, roasted pheasant.
