Lagrein (pronounced lah-GRINE) is an ancient grape variety that finds its home in the sunny vineyards of Trentino-Alto Adige in northeastern Italy. It first appeared in wine documentation around the beginning of the 13th century, was praised in 1370 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, and was on the brink of extinction by the 1970s.
This exciting varietal is a rarity. There are only about 1000 acres planted to Lagrein in the world. The grapes for this wine were sourced from a small vineyard near Pleasant Valley in El Dorado, California.
Dark purple to almost opaque black. To call it full bodied is an understatement. However, it features light floral notes combined with rich herbal notes, toasty oak and tar.
It was barrel aged for 30 months in French oak barrels.
